Course Objective

This two-day hands-on course includes lecture, discussion, videos of flap design and closure procedures followed by hands-on training with freshly frozen cadavers. This lecture provides an overview of head and neck anatomy pertinent to dentoalveolar surgery, the biology of wound healing, and surgical consent. Flap design and closure varies according to the planned surgical endpoint. This course will expose the participant with a wide range of flap design for biopsies, extractions, periodontal surgery and dental implant therapy. Participants will learn the available suture material and needle designs, and how they should be selected for various surgical procedures. Procedures to be covered include: Flap design & closure around teeth & dental implants, masticatory mucosal harvest, pedicle & transpositional grafting, techniques for use of acellular dermis around teeth & dental implants, extraction socket grafting for implant site development.. These procedures are taught with unique and clinician proven step-by-step teaching procedural surgical guides.

Upon completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Describe anatomy and biology of periodontal tissues around natural teeth and dental implants
  • Identify indications and the application for acellular dermis grafting, palatal gingival grafting, subepithelial connective tissue grafting, soft tissue adjunctive procedures and socket preservation procedures
  • Describe the types of soft tissue allogenic material available, the harvesting of masticatory mucosa, and the various surgical closure materials and techniques
  • Understand the most user friendly techniques for successful placement of soft tissue augmentation, ridge augmentation, root coverage with autogeneous and allogenic materials
  • Learn the rationale and use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Recognize and treat soft tissue complications
  • Describe pre and post-operative surgical complications
  • Describe how to manage post-operative complications
  • Learn to evaluate the soft tissue environment prior to implant therapy or conventional fixed partial dentures

About the Speakers

Lee Silverstein Lee Silverstein, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD is an Associate Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the topics of periodontics, dental implantology, bone grafting and suturing. Having had over 100 journal articles and 8 textbook chapters published, he has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Silverstein is privileged to be on the Editorial Board of Practical Periodontics and Aesthetic Dentistry, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, Functional Esthetics and Restorative Dentistry, Collaborative Dental Techniques, and Academy of General Dentistry Scientific Magazine. Additionally, he has been granted Fellowships in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Silverstein is the author of the highly acclaimed textbook entitled “Principles of Dental Suturing: A Complete Guide to Surgical Closure.” and has just completed his new book entitled “Principles of Soft Tissue Surgery: A Complete Step-by-Step Procedural Guide” available in 2007. Peter Shatz Peter Shatz, DDS is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of periodontics and dental implantology. He has had numerous journal articles and textbook chapters published, and has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Shatz is the past President of the Atlanta Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and is the editor for the Northwestern District Dental Society. He is also a consultant to the Georgia Board of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to periodontal care and dental implants in Atlanta, Georgia at Kennestone Periodontics, P.C.
Raymond van Gennip, DDS, MSD Raymond van Gennip, DDS, MSD was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where he received his first dental degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1984. He attained his second Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and his Masters in Periodontics in 1997, both from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and is also a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the European Federation of Periodontists and the Dutch Society of Periodontists. He maintains a private practice in Silver Spring, Maryland.
