Redefining Perioplastic Surgery
“Thinking Outside the Palate©
Most perioplastic surgery for grafting can now be done without palate surgery for free gingival grafts or connective tissue grafts. Acellular dermis can be used in a simplified technique without the necessity of tedious and time consuming tunneling. Placental membrane is a new product that brings more options to treating recession defects due to lost attachment. It is easily placed, does not require suturing, and heals without infection or inflammation.
Course Objectives for Participants:
  • Recognize the prevalence of recession defects in our patient population.
  • Describe gingival soft tissue anatomy, blood supply and wound healing.
  • Utilize soft tissue manipulation with incisions and flap design for predictable graft results.
  • Understand the contributory factors in root coverage grafting.
  • Understand the value and use of biological growth factors in soft tissue surgery.
  • Describe the indications for gingival grafts, connective tissue, acellular dermis, and palatal derived membranes for attachment gain, root coverage and implant augmentation.
  • Diagnose and treat recession and lost attachment sites with soft tissue surgery.
  • Predict and prevent soft tissue grafting complications.
