Course Description

Site Development from a Prosthodontic Perspective.

This course is designed to provide the clinician with the ability to identify the need for site development for optimum anatomic implant placement.

Restoration of anatomic integrity for implant placement will be practiced on both models and fresh frozen cadaver specimens.

Course Objectives

Recognize indications for successful grafting
Identify the prosthetic need for site development
Become familiar with techniques for immediate sinus grafting and implant placement
Differentiate indications for closed (osteotome) vs. open (lateral) access sinus grafting
Become familiar with osteotome (closed) grafting techniques

Hands-on laboratory workshops will be located in the on-site 12 station professional laboratory.

Instructors

Thomas J. McGarry, D.D.S. Clinical Director

Dr. McGarry received his D.D.S. degree in 1975 from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, his Certificate of Prosthodontics in 1978 from UCSF/VA San Francisco, and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 1991. He is a fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists and has served as President of the College. He is a member of the ADA, Academy of Osseointegration, American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, Academy of Prosthodontics, Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and the American College of Dentists.

Dr. McGarry maintains a full-time private practice limited to Prosthodontics.

Dan O’Donoghue, Ph.D., PA

Dr. O’Donoghue received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anatomy, Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in 1984. He is a Graduate of Distinction, Physician Assistant Program OU College of Medicine. He is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Family and Preventive Medicine and Cell Biology, OU College of Medicine. He received the Regents Award for Superior Teaching, Department of Cell Biology in both 2005 and 2006.

Dr. O’Donoghue currently teaches human anatomy to OU College of Medicine and College of Dentistry students.

Course Objective

This course is a unique two-day lecture and hands-on experience. It offers the unique opportunity for each participant to learn head and neck anatomy pertinent for performing implant, oral and periodontal surgery. Each participant will learn the placement of root form dental implants and socket grafting in a unique step-by-step fashion, followed by seeing actual videos of these procedures. Each participant will then actually perform these procedures on freshly frozen cadavers under the direct supervision of the course instructors.

The objective of this course is to inform and assist each participant in achieving a higher level of clinical comfort with placement of dental implants, socket grafting, manipulation of surgical flaps, obtaining of tension free surgical closure and proper suture materials and the methods to use for each of these therapies. This course includes the fundamental biomechanics & biology of bone as well as the rationale for the diagnosis, treatment planning and the clinical practice of placing root form dental implants. The course will also cover informed consent, pre and post surgical considerations, possible pathways for post surgical infection and management of post surgical complications. Learning Objectives:

Understand how to properly diagnose and treatment plan implant patients
Understand the biomechanics of alveolar bone and how they affect dental implant therapy.
Understand the pre and post-operative considerations for implant and socket grafting
Describe the techniques to perform socket grafting
Understand when and why to use osteotomes during implant placement
Describe how to obtain tension free primary surgical flap closure
Understand the suture materials and techniques for successful implant placement, implant uncovering and socket grafting procedures.

About the Speakers

Lee Silverstein, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD is an Associate Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the topics of periodontics, dental implantology, bone grafting and suturing. Having had over 100 journal articles and 8 textbook chapters published, he has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Silverstein is privileged to be on the Editorial Board of Practical Periodontics and Aesthetic Dentistry, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, Functional Esthetics and Restorative Dentistry, Collaborative Dental Techniques, and Academy of General Dentistry Scientific Magazine. Additionally, he has been granted Fellowships in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Silverstein is the author of the highly acclaimed textbook entitled “Principles of Dental Suturing: A Complete Guide to Surgical Closure.” and has just completed his new book entitled “Principles of Soft Tissue Surgery: A Complete Step-by-Step Procedural Guide” available in 2007. Richard Meszler, Ph.D is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland. He has been teaching anatomy and neuroscience at the Dental School since 1971 and served as course director of the human anatomy/neuroscience course from 1995 – 2000. In that capacity he coordinated the anatomy, histology and neuroscience curriculum for dental students. He continues to teach anatomy to dental students and is course director of the neuroscience course. In addition, he has been teaching anatomy as part of a 2 week implant course for senior dental students since 1997 and has taught dental CE courses in head and neck anatomy.

Peter Shatz, DDS is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of periodontics and dental implantology. He has had numerous journal articles and textbook chapters published, and has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Shatz is the past President of the Atlanta Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and is the editor for the Northwestern District Dental Society. He is also a consultant to the Georgia Board of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to periodontal care and dental implants in Atlanta, Georgia at Kennestone Periodontics, P.C.

Raymond van Gennip, DDS, MSD was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where he received his first dental degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1984. He attained his second Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and his Masters in Periodontics in 1997, both from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and is also a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the European Federation of Periodontists and the Dutch Society of Periodontists. He maintains a private practice in Silver Spring, Maryland.

COURSE INTENT

This course is designed to give clinicians the confidence to perform soft tissue grafts, appropriate flap design for full and partial thickness flaps, suturing and advanced bone grafting procedures upon returning to their offices. Our structure is a combination of in-depth lecture, over the shoulder demonstration and a hands-on workshop with models and fresh frozen cadaver heads on advanced bone grafting for implant placement. One of the unique features of our course is that we provide panoramic radiographs of every cadaver head to simulate a realistic learning experience. This is the closest thing to performing live surgery! Each participant will receive a comprehensive manual which compiles Powerpoint slides from the lecture, as well as current literature covering specific surgical procedures. This makes following the lecture more enjoyable than having to take detailed notes, and provides an excellent reference back in the office after the course. Each participant will also receive a personalized monogrammed scrub as well as a soft sided attaché.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completing this course the clinician should be able to treatment plan dental implants based on prosthetic classifications, divisions of available bone and classifications of bone density. The surgeon will be able to provide appropriate manipulation and grafting of the soft tissues. Finally, the implant surgeon will have a more thorough understanding of advanced bone grafting procedures which will ultimately improve implant success, longevity and esthetics for their patients.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Course Director: John Russo, D.D.S., M.H.S. is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He completed his periodontal training and earned a Master in Health Sciences degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Russo is a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is in private practice in Sarasota, FL and is a clinical assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Division of Periodontics. He is an author and an International lecturer on bone grafting and dental implant surgery.
