The 8th Dental Implant Symposium will feature presentations from Drs. Jay Beagle, Ed McGlumphy and John Muse. Their topics include the latest surgical advances for dental implant therapy, prosthetic solutions for dental implants: abutment management, digital technologies for implant diagnosis and therapy, and guided surgical techniques.

This 2.5-day course will begin Thursday afternoon with lecture. Friday will be spent at the Symposium and on Saturday participants will observe live implant surgeries. This course will allow you to directly observe patient surgical and restorative procedures with Dr. Lyndon Cooper. Detailed case reviews will be used to reinforce patient selection, treatment planning, step-wise procedures, and problem solving. Careful attention to your questions will be assured in this live surgery demonstration course by a low student/ faculty ratio. Attendance is limited to the first 30 applicants. Fee: $995.

About the Speakers

Dr. Jay Beagle is a periodontist specializing in periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery and dental implant surgery. A dedicated clinician with more than two decades of periodontal and dental implant experience, Dr. Beagle is one of the country’s most respected surgeons. As an educator, Dr. Beagle lectures nationally and internationally, and continues to pioneer, refine, and teach surgical techniques to remain at the forefront of periodontal esthetic and implant dentistry research and development. He maintains a private practice in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has placed thousands of implants since 1994. Dr. Beagle is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI), and a leader in the dental implant field. Trained at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, Dr. Beagle received his Periodontal Certificate and Masters Degree from the University of Kentucky. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists.

Dr. Ed McGlumphy graduated from The Ohio State College of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency at the University of Texas-San Antonio. He returned to Ohio State for prosthodontic training and received a master’s degree in 1988. Since that time, he has been a full time prosthodontic faculty member at The Ohio State University responsible for all aspects of predoctoral and postdoctoral implant education. He has also served as principal investigator for multiple studies on implant component physical properties and prospective implant clinical trials. This work has led to over seventy-five publications and $5.2 million in extramural funding. He has been a reviewer for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants. He has a private practice limited to implant prosthodontics and lectures internationally in the field of implant dentistry.

Dr. John Muse received his dental degree from Emory University School of Dentistry. After dental school, Dr. Muse joined the United States Army and completed a one-year general dentistry practice residency at Fort Riley, Kansas. He then served as a General Dental Officer for five years in Germany and in the United States. Dr. Muse then completed his surgical residency training at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. After completing his residency program, Dr. Muse was assigned to Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Darmall Army Hospital. He also served as Chief of Oral Surgery for the Two-Year General Practice Residency Program. Dr. Muse left the Army in 1999 and bought Dr. Perry Brickman’s practice in June of 2000. Dr. Muse has a special interest in dental implant surgery and he has spoken both nationally and internationally on this subject. Dr. Muse is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Time & Location

The symposium on Friday will be held at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. Registration will begin at 8:30am. The program will be held from 9:00am - 4:30pm. The Friday Center is located on Friday Center Drive just off Highway 54 on the east side of Chapel Hill. A continental breakfast and buffet lunch will be provided with your paid registration.

The symposium registration fee is $265 for dentists and $165 for team members. The symposium will award 6 hours of CDE credit.

Refund Policy

Since considerable advance planning is necessary for these continuing education programs, a tuition refund, less a $30 fee, will be issued for cancellation up to 7 days prior to the start date of the course. The cancellation fee is necessary to cover materials and facilities costs incurred for each participant, which are non-refundable to us. No refunds can be issued after November 6, 2009.

Course Objective

This course is a unique two-day lecture and hands-on experience. It offers the unique opportunity for each participant to learn head and neck anatomy pertinent for performing implant, oral and periodontal surgery. Each participant will learn the placement of root form dental implants and socket grafting in a unique step-by-step fashion, followed by seeing actual videos of these procedures. Each participant will then actually perform these procedures on freshly frozen cadavers under the direct supervision of the course instructors.

The objective of this course is to inform and assist each participant in achieving a higher level of clinical comfort with placement of dental implants, socket grafting, manipulation of surgical flaps, obtaining of tension free surgical closure and proper suture materials and the methods to use for each of these therapies.

This course includes the fundamental biomechanics & biology of bone as well as the rationale for the diagnosis, treatment planning and the clinical practice of placing root form dental implants. The course will also cover informed consent, pre and post surgical considerations, possible pathways for post surgical infection and management of post surgical complications.

Learning Objectives:

Understand how to properly diagnose and treatment plan implant patients
Understand the biomechanics of alveolar bone and how they affect dental implant therapy.
Understand the pre and post-operative considerations for implant and socket grafting
Describe the techniques to perform socket grafting
Understand when and why to use osteotomes during implant placement
Describe how to obtain tension free primary surgical flap closure
Understand the suture materials and techniques for successful implant placement, implant uncovering and socket grafting procedures.

About the Speakers

Lee Silverstein, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD is an Associate Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the topics of periodontics, dental implantology, bone grafting and suturing. Having had over 100 journal articles and 8 textbook chapters published, he has contributed extensively to the literature available on these topics. Dr. Silverstein is privileged to be on the Editorial Board of Practical Periodontics and Aesthetic Dentistry, Dentistry Today, Inside Dentistry, Functional Esthetics and Restorative Dentistry, Collaborative Dental Techniques, and Academy of General Dentistry Scientific Magazine. Additionally, he has been granted Fellowships in the Pierre Fauchard Academy, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. Dr. Silverstein is the author of the highly acclaimed textbook entitled “Principles of Dental Suturing: A Complete Guide to Surgical Closure.” and has just completed his new book entitled “Principles of Soft Tissue Surgery: A Complete Step-by-Step Procedural Guide” available in 2007. Peter Shatz, DDS is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics of periodontics and dental implantology. Dr. Shatz is the past President of the Atlanta Chapter of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity and is the editor for the Northwestern District Dental Society. He is also a consultant to the Georgia Board of Dentistry. He maintains a private practice limited to periodontal care and dental implants in Atlanta, Georgia at Kennestone Periodontics, P.C. Raymond van Gennip, DDS, MSD was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where he received his first dental degree from the University of Amsterdam in 1984. He is a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and is also a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the European Federation of Periodontists and the Dutch Society of Periodontists. Dr. Rob Heller		Dr. Alfred "Duke" Heller
Dr. Robert Heller is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the Ohio State University College of Dentistry (1988). He completed a Prosthetic residency at Medical College of Virginia (1990) and a hospital based implant residency at Loma Linda University Dental School (1997) He served as President of the Ohio Section of the American College of Prosthodontics and Chairman for the Ohio Dental Association’s Subcouncil on Young dentists. Dr. “Rob” is a teaching faculty member of the MII since 1995, and director of the prosthetic department.		Dr. Alfred Heller limits his practice to the placement of dental implants and bone grafting procedures since 1969. He received a DDS (1962) and MS (1974) from The Ohio State University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry as well as Midw est Implant Institute, which he founded in 1980. Dr Heller is board certified in oral implantology and past president of the ABOI. He is also on staff at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Vickie McCune started in dentistry in 1978, as a dental assistant. She has been teaching, her true love, for 15 years. Anyone who has taken her courses remembers with fun and laughter how to do ‘Sterile Protocol Technique’ and ‘Surgical Assisting’ for Implant Dentistry. She has been with Dr. Heller and traveled/ lectured with MII for 15 years.

This program is designed to teach SIMPLE implant surgery and SIMPLE implant restoration through hands-on training. Midwest Implant Institute has been facilitating implant education for 29 years. This course will provide “state-of-the-art” information regarding dental implantology; to develop a philosophical and conceptual approach to implantology; to develop a biological rationale for proper treatment planning based upon sound scientific and clinical principles; to understand the integration of surgical and prosthetic components of implantology; to successfully evaluate the quantity and quality of radiographic analyses including CT scans, panoramic X-rays and periapical X-rays; to enhance proper case selection for maximum clinical success.

In addition to lectures, this continuum will include literature review sessions, “live” patient demonstrations by faculty, practical “hands-on” workshops with leading implant companies, and treatment planning sessions.

The 8th Dental Implant Symposium and Live Surgery Demonstration Course combines both lecture and live surgical demonstration. Each participant in the 2.5 day course will directly observe patient surgical and restorative procedures. In addition, detailed case reviews will be used to reinforce patient selection, treatment planning, step-wise procedures, and problem solving. Careful attention to individual questions will be assured for the live surgery demonstration portion by a low student/faculty ratio. Therefore attendance for the live surgeries is limited to the first 30 participants.

Course Description

Implant placement from a prosthodontic perspective.

This course gives you the mentored experience you need to master optimally placed dental implants for the best aesthetic and functional restorations.

After intensive multi-session hands-on instruction, you will be mentored while surgically placing implants into your own patient.

Unlike other weekend courses where you buy equipment but never feel comfortable enough to go home and use it, our participants have 100% success rates in integration of implant placement into their practices.

Course Objectives

Successfully utilize the most advanced and least invasive technique of tooth replacement
Become successful at achieving prosthodontically favorable implant positioning utilizing emerging techniques including Biaxial Implant Positioning
Reduce complications associated with malpositioned implants
Increase auxiliary staff’s level of comfort and competence in implant placement assistance
Increase patient satisfaction by providing esthetically pleasing and functional solutions for missing teeth
Increase patient satisfaction and increase practitioner success with single provider care practice management

This step-by-step course prepares the participant for implant dentistry in his practice.The final session will be devoted to placing implants in the patient provided by the individual participant. A patient may be provided for a participant for a fee subject to availability.

Hands-on laboratory workshops will be located in the on-site 12 station professional laboratory.

Thomas J. McGarry, D.D.S.

Dr. McGarry received his D.D.S. degree in 1975 from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, his Certificate of Prosthodontics in 1978 from UCSF/VA San Francisco, and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 1991. He is a fellow in the American College of Prosthodontists and has served as President of the College. He is a member of the ADA, Academy of Osseointegration, American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics, Academy of Prosthodontics, Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and the American College of Dentists. Dr. McGarry maintains a full-time private practice limited to Prosthodontics.

Lars O. Bouma, D.D.S., M.S., F.A.C.P.

Dr. Bouma completed his D.D.S. (1994) at Baylor and after a GPR at the VA/Little Rock, AR, he served in the USAF as a general dentist. He received his Certificate in Prosthodontics and a Master of Science degree from the University of Texas/San Antonio and became a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 2002. Dr. Bouma served as Chief of Prosthodontics, Dental Laboratory Flight Commander and Assistant Director for the AEGD Residency at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, NE. He is currently on staff at the OU School of Dentistry and maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics.

John A. Sorensen, D.M.D., PhD

As founder and director of Pacific Dental Institute in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Sorensen is engaged in a practice limited to prosthodontics, currently conducting six clinical trials on all-ceramic fixed prosthodontic systems as well as in vitro materials testing, and providing hands-on continuing education programs in fixed prosthodontics and implant dentistry. Sorensen is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a member of many prosthodontic and dental research academies. Dr. Sorensen has published over 72 research articles and chapters, and over 120 research abstracts. He has given over 100 invited lectures in 29 countries.

Vincent Celenza, D.M.D.

Dr. Celenza received his D.M.D. degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Dentistry and his Certificate of Prosthodontics from Boston University in 1979. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a fellow in the American College of Prosthdontists, a past-president of the Northeastern Gnathological Society, a Fellow of the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics, and the future 2010 president of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. Dr. Celenza maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics in Manhattan which he shared with Frank Sr. for 25 years.

Dan O’Donoghue, Ph.D.

Dr. O’Donoghue received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anatomy, Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in 1984. He is a Graduate of Distinction, Physician Assistant Program OU College of Medicine. He is an Associate Professor in both the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and Cell Biology, OU College of Medicine. He received the Regents Award for Superior Teaching, Department of Cell Biology in both 2005 and 2006. Dr. O’Donoghue currently teaches human anatomy to both OU College of Medicine and College of Dentistry students.
