This course will focus on the evaluation and management of soft tissue deficiencies and development of surgical skills for connective tissue (CT) grafting including; closed harvest from the palate and tuberosity, incision design, donor site evaluation and graft bed preparation. The role of soft tissue enhancement for gingival recession defects, prior to implant reconstruction and at 2nd stage implant uncovering will be demonstrated. Additionally, we will present the use of apical and lateral repositioned flaps, frenoplasty, management of high muscle attachments and vestibuloplasty. Proficiency in these soft tissue management skills are critical to a long term esthetic and functional outcome in implant reconstruction.

Dr. Cullum completed his DDS with distinction at the University of Alberta, Canada and residency training at Westchester Medical Center, New York. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Cullum has had the opportunity to speak at the national meetings of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Academy of Osseointegration, American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Academy of Prosthodontists, Cuban Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, as well as many state and local meetings. He has contributed a textbook chapter on implant reconstruction and served in leadership roles at both state and local societies. At Implants Northwest, he practices oral and maxillofacial surgery with an emphasis on immediate and minimally invasive techniques in esthetic implant reconstruction. Dr. Cullum is the President of Implants Northwest LIVE Learning Center. The Learning Center emphasizes training in advanced techniques for surgeon/restorative teams using LIVE surgery and hands-on application in a small group environment.

	The Contemporary Soft Tissue Grafting for Implant Reconstruction course is designed for clinicians with foundational implant experience who desire to improve their knowledge and surgical skill sets in soft tissue grafting for implant dentistry. The focus will be the application of the Pikos Institute Philosophy to optimize soft tissue architecture for implant site development, surgical implant placement and periimplant maintenance. The entire spectrum of basic and advanced surgical techniques will be presented, including soft tissue reconstruction and related periodontal plastic surgical procedures. A dedicated section of this course will address esthetic zone reconstruction. Application of interactive CT to site development, hands-on soft tissue model surgery and LIVE Surgical demonstration of soft tissue procedures for implant dentistry will be featured.

	Course Objectives
	Implement the Pikos Institute Philosophy of oral implant rehabilitation for soft tissue diagnosis and treatment sequencing for implant procedures. Describe the anatomy, biology and wound healing of periimplant tissues. Clinically evaluate soft tissue as a part of comprehensive implant treatment planning. Interpret clinically significant anatomic variables for soft tissue grafting utilizing interactive CT. Optimally sequence soft tissue procedures for successful implant surgery and bone grafting. Understand, describe and utilize the appropriate surgical and prosthetic principles for comprehensive site development in the esthetic zone. Describe and utilize the indications and protocols for immediate provisionalization. Describe the guidelines, indications and surgical protocols for the following: Gingival grafts, subepithelial connective tissue grafts, and acellular dermis matrix allografts. Developing optimal periimplant soft tissue architecture. Utilize growth factor technology in conjunction with soft tissue grafting protocols. Recognize, manage and prevent soft tissue grafting complications.

COURSE INTENT

This course is designed to give clinicians the confidence to perform soft tissue grafts, appropriate flap design for full and partial thickness flaps, suturing and advanced bone grafting procedures upon returning to their offices. Our structure is a combination of in-depth lecture, over the shoulder demonstration and a hands-on workshop with models and fresh frozen cadaver heads on advanced bone grafting for implant placement. One of the unique features of our course is that we provide panoramic radiographs of every cadaver head to simulate a realistic learning experience. This is the closest thing to performing live surgery! Each participant will receive a comprehensive manual which compiles Powerpoint slides from the lecture, as well as current literature covering specific surgical procedures. This makes following the lecture more enjoyable than having to take detailed notes, and provides an excellent reference back in the office after the course. Each participant will also receive a personalized monogrammed scrub as well as a soft sided attaché.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

After completing this course the clinician should be able to treatment plan dental implants based on prosthetic classifications, divisions of available bone and classifications of bone density. The surgeon will be able to provide appropriate manipulation and grafting of the soft tissues. Finally, the implant surgeon will have a more thorough understanding of advanced bone grafting procedures which will ultimately improve implant success, longevity and esthetics for their patients.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Course Director: John Russo, D.D.S., M.H.S. is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He completed his periodontal training and earned a Master in Health Sciences degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Russo is a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. He is in private practice in Sarasota, FL and is a clinical assistant professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in the Division of Periodontics. He is an author and an International lecturer on bone grafting and dental implant surgery.

He was the Director of the Oral Implantology Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine from 1989 to 1996. Dr. Misch has maintained a private practice restricted to implant surgery (bone grafting and implant placement) and related prosthetics for more than 25 years. He currently practices in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
