Incorporating third party insurance into the dental practice has traditionally been limited to dental insurance. Most practices rarely, if ever, attempt to seek reimbursement under major medical insurance. Medical insurance plans may cover a variety of dental surgical procedures associated with biopsies, periodontal surgery, extractions, bone grafting, ridge augmentation, sinus augmentation, diagnostic imaging, dental implants and behavior management.

The common impression is that major medical insurance may only be used when there is congenital defects, pathology or traumatic injury. Although dental insurance usually covers routine dental therapy, many individual plans have a large number of exclusions. Dental implants and all related care is usually not covered. Major medical insurance may actually cover a larger number of procedures than dental insurance, and one does not necessarily need the service provider to have a medical license.

There are significant differences between filing dental insurance as compared to major medical insurance. This ranges from the claim forms themselves, treatment codes, attachments and clinical data.

Course Objectives

This interactive one day course will provide an overview of dental and medical insurance. Specific coding sets for common dental surgical procedures will be reviewed. Topics to be covered include procedure code selection, diagnostic information, documentation, claims narratives, claims attachments and claims filing.

Participants will also be exposed to clinical examples of each surgical procedure. This will enable the participant to better understand what occurs in the treatment room, and make them a better communicator with their patients.

Participation

This course is designed for the dental business office staff, treatment coordinator and Doctor. The philosophy is to create a more educated dental team which can maximize the use of third-party payers.

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between dental and medical insurance
  • Requirements for a complete dental insurance claim
  • Requirements for a complete medical insurance claim
  • Dental & Medical procedure codes
  • Diagnostic information needed to be collected by the clinical staff
  • Medical Diagnostic codes
  • Completing claims for Dental & Medical Insurance
  • Grouping procedure codes to maximize reimbursement
